2 Toan: Toan is a main character in the story.He was frightened worried and confused, because he didn’t understand what was happing.All he understood was that things were different the atmosphere of the new years celebrations were different, but he didn’t understand why.Because he was so young.For example, when they got on the boat he also felt worried and scared, because he didn’t understand what was happening or where they were going.He remembered the moment when the pirates took aunt Mai and he couldn’t do anything about it.Because he was so young, it seemed as if his father was indifferent when Mai was taken.He didn’t understand that his father had an even more important thing to do, so different ages give different perspective and feelings.
3 Minh: He is Toan’s father and also the head of the family.He was worried and grieved.The communistic government before took him away, because of his role in Vietnamese society, and he worked for a different government, so he couldn’t stay in Vietnam.He cares a lot about his family.He made the money for his family and prayed too much money to get his family freedom.It was also same on the boat.Minh didn’t go to help his older sister Mai, because he knew he should look after all the family.He wanted to help, but he couldn’t.
4 Hoa: She is Toan’s mother, but she was special.She was had dozens of years of regrets and anger, because she couldn’t get out of mind her decision to get married.She regrets and is angry that her mother years ago did not like her choice of husband.She tried to be strong.
