For Toan:
He is 6 years old child who is innocent on the excited about the chinese new year. He has no experience of anything major. He just follow what he is told by the adults. He sensed there was something going wrong as Linh didn't told him what happen in the city. Linh didn't share the secret to Toan and Toan was mad to Linh about this. He also knew others were not happy on chinese new year.
For Kim Tuyet (grandma):
She felt empty towards the serparation of her family. She was scared that she couldn't see her family again and she is concern of their safety. She is also understanding as she experienced the contrast of freedom, prosperities and then war and no rights.
For Minh (Toan's father):
He worried about his family not getting to the escape boat. He is keep thinking "what if". He is also concern with the decision that he is made for the escaping. He is also experience from the past as he knew they have a better life.
For Hoa ( Minh's wife):
She torn between leaving to staying. She regreted from the past and she concerned family values. She could probably be happy anywhere but family came first.
