sad that they would leave her. Happy, because she thought her son can
support his family, and want to start a new life by himself. She felt sad
because of they leaved. She lost her husband, so when they had gone, she
felt lonely again. She decided to stay at Vietnam, because she too old to
go with them. However, she was still prayed for them and wish them had a
great life. In this part, the composer used the third person to describe
it.
(b)Toan: When Toan’s father decided to except to Australia, he could not
understand that, he just thought it was different from the other New Year
Celebration. He was too young to understand everything. Toan was scared and
very quiet when they on the boat, because he never know where they would
go. As they met the pirates on the sea, the leader of the pirates took Mai,
and Toan felt very guilty, because he could not do anything, also he could
not understand his parents, he thought they should help her when she was
taken. It was used the first person to show Toan’s perspective, it can
make it more vivid and it can easier to show what is going on. The composer
used simile and colloquial language in this part.
(c)Minh: Minh was the leader of the family; he should always take care of
his family. So, after the officers took him, he was worried about his
family. That’s why he decided to leave Vietnam immediately. When they met
the pirates on the sea, he was very frightening that his family were killed
by them, but he can not look very scared, because he was the most powerful
of the family, he should protect them. But he still looked forward to start
a new life in Australia. The composer used the third person in this part.
There were lots of words to describe the scenery; it can show how Minh’s
feeling at that time.
(d)Hoa: Hoa was scared and frightened because they would leave their
motherland, their future was unknown. She knew there were lots of things
would happen and she worried about her mother-in-law because their except.
Hoa tried her best to look after Linh and Phuong, because they lost their
parents, she wanted to make them comfortable.
