The changes that came about through the changes or "improvements" made by the Tjulkura were not for the real benefit of the Anangu. As with their first arrival many of the changes came about as a result of the white man wanting to use the land for his benefit or profit.
The missionaries at least had religious reasons or motives for imposing their way of life on the ngurra and the Anangu. We would like to believe that they were trying to do what they felt the Bible and Christian teachings had taught them. However the Assimilation Policy which brought about the Stolen Generation of children was not a very Christian act at all.
The health of the Anangu suffered as the Tjulkura introduced diseases that had never effected the indigenous peoples before. Their resistance to these was non-existant and so they suffered dreadfully from common diseases such as measles, chicken pox and even colds and the flu. The white man also introduced food stuffs with which the Anangu were not familiar leading to a change in their diets meaning that they had to adapt again and move away from their traditional bush tucker which was still disappearing because of Tjulkura land use. The white amn also introduced alcohol and all of its problems to the Anangu.
Over this period the Anangu were forced by the Tjulkura to adopt too many of the white man's ways and encouraged to forget their traditions - We believe that this process was very wrong and is something that the White Australians should be ashamed of.
