Dear Rappers,
We thought the impact of the changes caused by the Tjulkura were devastating for
the Anangu people.
As more Tjulkura moved into the area to build the telegraph line, cattle
stations, missionaries and towns, they forced the Anangu off their traditional
land. The Anangu could not find enough bush tucker to survive so they killed
cattle and ended up getting shot. Without bush tucker, many died from scurvy and
starvation. Others died from Tjulkura diseases.
The missionaries gave them food and protection and taught them to read and write
but they made them live like white men in houses and learn new ways. The
missionaries took children from Anangu families which broke up the families and
caused emotional destruction. This Assimilation into white man's society meant
that many Anangu people forgot their traditional ways and beliefs and were left
feeling confused and angry.
