The Assimilation Policy brought good and bad things to the anangu. It brought lots of groups together to try and share food and water but tried to make life like the whites. Anangu were brought in from the desert and had to try and be happy. Sometimes the missions were able to help the anangu feel better.
We talked about some other books we had read about Mission Life...A is for Aunty, Mud Cakes from the Mish, and the movie Rabbit Proof Fence. We talked about how life was the same in lots of these places for the Aboriginal people. The influence the whites had on their way of like and we were very excited to be learning about the influence that the Aboriginal people have on all of us today in the book ,The Mission, which was a story from up near Moree (Kamiloroi country) the kids called their covers for sleeping under doonas (or waggas). All of us have a doona and we didnt know until today where that word came from. So that was really exciting.
