papunya_rap Rap Point 2

 Dear Rappers,

We thought that the Anangu were treated unfairly by the Tjulkurra.

The Anangu children were taken away from their families. They were put into missions. By taking the children away, families were broken up. When the families were broken up, many traditions couldn’t be passed on. There weren’t enough marriage partners so many Anangu joined the missions. Life was very different.

Anangu now sat at tables to eat, they ate 3 times a day, they ate food that wasn’t traditional “bush tucker”. The Anangu weren’t used to living in large groups in dormitories; they were introduced to another religion; clothes changed. The Anangu were now bounded by fences and Tjulkurra did not teach their language.

Coming together in large groups had its positive points and it’s negative. By coming together in large groups diseases spread more easily and many Anangu died. These new diseases were introduced by Tjulkurra.

Cattle stations were built and bush tucker was trampled and destroyed. Over many thousands of years of living with the dry conditions, suddenly they couldn’t survive droughts because of Tjulkurra taking more resources than they needed.

Schools were built in ancient areas to provide education to Anangu and Tjulkurra. Anangu and Tjulkurra were separated with their education: Tjulkurra were taught in the morning and Anangu in the afternoon. Why were they separated?

Our class believes assimilation wasn’t very fair to the Anangu. They weren’t treated with respect from Tjulkurra.  Without assimilation more Anangu would have survived. Assimilation assisted Tjulkurra not Anangu.

We’re enjoying this book and we have learnt lots about Anangu and Tjulkurra.

Goodbye Rappers,
