Binna Binna Man is an Aboriginal book because it is about an Aboriginal boy and his extended family going to a funeral in Northern Queensland. The Aboriginal culture is brought to life in the real world by the aboriginal boy who tells the story.
The story is written down and illustrated like the oral tradition. Aboriginal language is used and street speak to make it more real. The font size of the writing changes depending on the characters' mood and the Subject matter.
The boy tells the story about the spirits, his totem, ancestors, and family and the Island land.
The Illustrations express the boys feelings about the things around him. There are many images of his family, his land and his totem, Gundji. Although she is dead, the Gundji still lives on in his heart and mind and gives him Strength and Courage.
The humour in this story makes the book entertaining and funny. It makes a change from the serious ideas of funerals and spirits and makes us like the characters more and makes us laugh just like the Aboriginal story teller.
