Hi, we are the Mac rappers and we have decided to post two responses to the Rap Points. We are group one and this is our response.
The cover of ‘The rabbits’ is very dark and gloomy in colour, with a dark background and a very pale and cold foreground. The uniforms of the rabbits are red and black, with the red representing anger and bloodshed, and the black representing evil, power and fear. The ship is illuminated with a golden light that makes it stand out from the rest of the scene and draws your eye to it.
The rabbits themselves are depicted wearing uniforms, representing order and power, and they are all very angular and give the impression of being very strict and firm. They also have a flag which a symbol of invasion, i.e. planting the flag, and guns that add to the sense of their having power. On the other hand, the natives in the far right are shown as very small and cute, and seem to be no match for the many rabbits that are disembarking the ship, even with the spears that they hold in readiness and watchfulness.
The ship is a dominant part of the scene and overpowers the other elements of the cover, like the two natives, as they are drawn as very small and insignificant. The natives look as though they would have no chance against the power and strength of the huge ship and the angular, sharp rabbits. The ship is looming over the scene ominously, and combined with the buildup of clouds and the darkness that is following the ship, it gives a sense of threat and danger.
The entire scene is a metaphor for almost every place that was invaded by anyone, anywhere. The ship is an amalgamation of many different cultures, from the sails that resemble those of old wooden sailing ships to the large, angular, metal bow of the ship that resembles a modern day destroyer. It even incorporates wings, as if it is also partly a mythological ship. It appears to be an old ship but it has technology all over it. This shows that it cannot be placed in any one time or place. The same can be said of the flags, because while they resemble the British flag they are not the same, and the uniforms of the rabbits resemble those of the British navy, but are not the same.
The automatic response is to associate the scene with the British invasion of Australia, with the rabbits as the white Europeans and the small brown animals as the Aboriginal people. The observer is placed to feel that the rabbits are invading, and that they are bringing something ominous and threatening with them.
