therabbits04_rap From Shaun Tan for MacRappers

What does the red flag that the rabbits have represent???

Well, it's meant to look a bit like a Union Jack, but not to directly represent Britain at all, maybe just to remind us of the similarities. It's quite an abstract symbol, but also more obvious than most flags, with arrows radiating outwards from a central point. This suggests two things at least; that the rabbits are interested in exploring and expanding or growing, and that their society might be organised around a central point (a middle), possibly their country of origin, a city or a government or king/queen. This is different from the numbats, for instance, who would probably live in tribes without central rulers, and be not interested in constant expansion or empire-building.

Why are the rabbit_s houses made out of jigsaw puzzles???

I answered this question just a bit earlier; to repeat, here it is again:

I was thinking about how a lot of construction in the modern world is prefabricated, meaning that bits are made a put together a bit like a jigsaw, and also often without a great deal of imagination, especially where everything is identical. It also gives us the sense that the rabbits are building very quickly, and have a kind of 'master plan' which all the other animals can only guess at.

Why do you have fingerprints on most of the pages ???

I answered this question in one of my first repsonses, but to briefly recap, I was wanting to sometimes give the impression that there is a natural, physical relationship between people and landscapes, which is quite an abstract idea. I also just like the fact that you can make very interesting patterns using finger and hand-prints, and I have often made other paintings using hand and finger-prints. It's also an interesting way of signing a work of art - nobody can argue that about who did it!
