whalerider05_rap Introducing Kerry Underhill

Hi everyone

I'm looking forward to joining with you in this exciting rap about the film Whale rider.

Currently I am the Senior Curriculum Adviser, English 7-12 at Curriculum K-12 Directorate, located at Ryde State Office, in the middle of metropolitan Sydney, but I like to travel all over the state to get to know your teachers. Recently I have enjoyed meeting many new faces at the English Years 7-10 workshops where I've been encouraging your teachers to have students join this rap.

Whale rider is a great text to use in an English class as it meets many requirements of the new syllabus. There is the additional incentive for you to be involved with the rap as it allows you to respond and compose texts for a real purpose and audience as well as integrating the use of ICT into English activities in meaningful ways. It is also important because its filmic aspects contribute to make this text one with many layers of meaning.

I would also like to thank the team from Port Macquarie High School for putting together such an engaging and interesting rap. I'm looking forward to hearing from you throughout the next few weeks.

Kerry
