A tribe of Native Americans in Canada called the Deer Tribe Medicine
Society, celebrate traditional puberty rites in a variety of ways. They
believe everyone and everything are connected to the Earth and Mother
Nature.
Their rites have a symbolic link to to the Great Search, which is similiar
to the search for the Holy Grail in the way that if they find the the answer
all of life's questions will be answered. They ask teenagers to prove
themseves physically rather then mentally by making them swim long distances
or go hiking in the bush for great periods of time without food or water.
This is to see if they will have the Spirit Dreams which prove that they are
in touch with nature.
