whalerider05_rap Paikea and the boat launch- Lisa, Madaleine, Tyson

One technique that is used in the boat launch scene is the use of the low
angle shot looking up at the boat as it is being launched. This shows or
implies mass, size, dominance and strength of the people.

A straight angle shot is used to show the singers and dancers on the beach.
>From this point of view, we see the facial expressions and the traditional
dancing actions. It shows pride and respect for their unity and cultural
community.

As the boat is moving off and into the sunshine, the shot is long. This
produces a feeling of progression and hope for the cultural community. The
shot then cuts to a mid shot of Paikea and Koro sitting side by side,
implying unity, togetherness, forgiveness and acceptance between them.

The tribe singing starts off soft then cresendoes, implying again strength
and unity. Paikea sings in the traditional Maori language, which turns into
a voice over. This emphasises her leadership and implies closure to the
problems in the film's story.

The lighting was bright, with the sun shining in a clear sky. This shows
hope and high prospects for the future.

The symbols in this scene are celebrational and traditional: the flowers
and tattoos. The whale tooth worn by Paikea is a symbol of her leadership.

By Lisa, Tyson and Madaleine
