The Impact of Scene 16

By Parramatta High School

9English1 Miss Begg

Scene 16 is a very moving scene, it brings together and FINISHES the movie very nicely. It brings together broken bonds.

It shows Pai’s self discovery, and the community coming together as one.

When Pai is elected as leader. The shot which shows the boat working symbolises the community. The boat which Pai’s dad begun carving twelve years ago, was put aside, when Koro rejected Pai. However now the boat is back in the sea where it belongs.

There is another important symbolism used in this scene to show reconciliation.

When Koro puts his arms around Pai, this shows that he has finally accepted the inevitable, Pai becoming chief.

A mid-shot is used to show the emotion on the faces of Pai and Koro as the community uses their native language to lead the rowers.

Then her voice over tells us that there is now a future for her people.

The End.
