Dear Rappers,
We found that there were many techniques used in Worst Best Friends that helped the characters and storyline become more believable. In order to show that Eddie really was a great big bully, the camera angle would start from his feet and slowly work up to his head. Gilbert’s shortness and weakness was emphasised by the camera angle being positioned to look down upon him. The camera was also useful in the scene when Roger is talking with Millicent on the bench. The camera only allows room for just Millicent and Roger in the frame to perhaps try and emphasise Millicent’s insistence on it just being them as friends.
Lighting was also important. This was evident when Roger’s Mum and dad were supposedly talking to each other at the dinner table with poor Roger caught in the middle. The atmosphere was dark to reflect the attitude of his parents towards each other.
We enjoyed the choice of music used to represent Eddie. We had our own Mexican stand off between students, using the same music. We noticed that this music was played whenever trouble, was about to happen, especially when it involved Eddie.
The character of Eddie wore tough looking clothes that were scruffy. He also wore a leather jacket that perhaps made him look even tougher. When Dusting was about to be a bully he kept his jacket on, perhaps for the same reason. Millicent tended to wear clothes that reflected her supposed perfect nature.
In the scene when Roger’s mum and dad were arguing, the camera faded in and out sideways to show the conversation bouncing backwards and forwards between each of them.
In summary film techniques are very helpful in adding humour, mystery, adventure and fear into a storyline and to character images.
