Principal of a Reading Recovery school [Sydney Region]

We hope that we can enthuse more Reading Recovery trained teachers to take their expertise and use it beyond the Reading Recovery program . . . in the classroom, whole school and wider school community.

At our school the knowledge acquired during Reading Recovery training has enabled teachers to fine tune, selectively program and organise materials and activities to ensure that all learning leads to the acquisition of reading and writing skills.

Reading and writing have become an integral part of classroom activities, not just confined to the literacy block.

The reading and writing results in the classroom far exceed results teachers obtained prior to being trained in Reading Recovery at this school.

Just a little something from Lachlan and myself to let you know how much we have appreciated your genuine support for Lachlan this year.

His confidence in reading is growing every day and it is very exciting to hear him reading (and attempting to read) environmental print as we shop, drive and share literature.

Yours kindly, J A

I would like to take this opportunity to offer my gratitude for the excellent work Mrs H. provided with the Reading Recovery program for my daughter Anastasia.

I appreciate the help that Mrs H. provided. It is a worthwhile project.

As you would probably know that Annelise is finishing school this Friday, I just wanted to write to you this little note to thank you very very much for all the effort you have put in for Annelise with her reading.

Her confidence is so high since you taught her to read. I hope that at her new school they care about and put in the effort that you did with her reading.

I promised her that Dad and I will still put in 100% with her reading. If there is any tip you could give me to keep her going and still love the reading that would be great.

I still don’t know how to thank you enough for all the effort and help.

THANKYOU!

THANK YOU!

THANK YOU!

I would like to express our sincere gratitude for making the Reading Recovery Program available to our son Jeddah. Jeddah’s progress has astounded us and him alike.

Jeddah has changed from a boy at the start of the year who had no confidence at reading and unwillingness to try to read - all linked. His self esteem was not great at this point as school was proving too difficult.

We were obviously delighted when he was identified as a candidate for Reading Recovery. We were always reading to Jeddah and he has always been surrounded with books, our whole family has a love of reading.

Hence we felt his unwillingness was not from lack of encouragement from home but rather from him needing some one-on-one in the early years as he didn’t seem to pick it up in the large classroom situation.

Jeddah has thrived in the program and is now a boy who loves reading at night with us, loves attending school and very keen on extending himself. Jeddah has achieved more than we ever thought he would this year (going on last year’s achievements).

We really have been amazed at the gains possible in a very short amount of time. Just half an hour a day!

Jeddah loves attending lessons with Mrs B; he feels a real sense of achievement. We often wonder what would have happened to Jeddah if he didn’t become a candidate for the select few positions available.

I suppose he would have continued to struggle, become more disenchanted by schooling, found other coping / avoidance strategies – maybe even slip through the cracks of the System in this process.

This program has made such a difference for our son. Thank you for offering the placement to us.

Kind regards, J B

The Reading Recovery program has been an invaluable part of our school for the past five years.

With our school population of students predominately from a non English speaking background, this program has helped many children achieve excellent outcomes.

The number of students going into Year 2 with literacy problems has been greatly reduced by participation in the Reading Recovery program. An average of ten students each year for the past five years has been on the program with 98% of those discontinuing successfully.

Reading Recovery has also enabled us to target children who need further help in literacy in the form of support teacher learning assistance.

Our Basic Skills Test results have also been greatly improved, with the students who have benefited from Reading Recovery gaining excellent results. This year in the Basic Skills Tests, 80% of Year 3 former Reading Recovery students were placed in Band 3 or higher and 100% of Year 5 former Reading Recovery students were placed in Band 3 or higher.

These results confirm the great benefit of this extra support our school has had, through Reading Recovery, for the past five years.

Speech Pathologist [Sydney Region]

I have recently worked with one of your students for a block of individual speech pathology sessions. These sessions have focused on improving early literacy skills (e.g. syllable counting and rhyming) and language development (developing and understanding of more abstract questions).

I understand that this child is currently participating in the Reading Recovery program at his school. The child’s mother has reported that she is very happy with the program and feels that her child’s reading skills have improved significantly.

During this block of therapy, I also have noticed the child’s reading skills have improved.

Sincerely, D V

I travel each day from Armidale to Walcha Central School. Two weeks ago I gave a U.N.E. student a lift to the Walcha Hospital. She is in her third year studying nursing.

On Tuesday I told her that I could not give her a lift on Wednesday, due to my Reading Recovery commitments in Armidale at a colleague visit.

She very quickly, and with a big smile, said, “ I used to do Reading Recovery when I was at school!”
