Hyperglycaemia

A high blood glucose level or hyperglycaemia occurs when an individual's blood glucose level is above the recommended target range for their age.

Procedures for managing hyperglycaemia should be documented in the student's individual health care plan.

When blood glucose levels are above 15mmol/L the student may be thirsty and may need to go to the toilet more often to pass urine. The student should be allowed to drink water and visit the toilet if necessary. They should still be able to participate in class activities.

If they feel unwell and/or are vomiting, however, a parent or other person nominated in the student's individual health care plan should be contacted to collect the student. An ambulance should be called if a parent or nominated contact can not be reached.

If the student has an insulin pump and their blood glucose level is above 15mmol/L the pump needs to be checked. If the pump has become disconnected parents should be called immediately, or an ambulance if a parent can't be contacted.
