Mental Health

Government schools aim to promote the positive mental health of students through what they teach to students, the way the school is conducted and in particular the kinds of relationships that are established between members of the school community.

Teachers aim to create classrooms that provide opportunities for their students to develop all aspects of their health including the social and emotional components.

The student welfare program in each school is designed to contribute to the creation of a safe, caring environment which encourages students to learn the skills for relating well to their teachers and other students and for building their own confidence and ability to negotiate, manage stress, seek help and solve problems.

The school counsellor plays an important role in the student welfare team in ensuring support for students who need extra help related to experiences such as bullying, grief and loss, family changes or peer relationships.

School counsellors work with individuals or groups of students and also liaise with parents and students about referrals to mental health professionals for assessment and support as appropriate.

If you or someone you know needs personal support, contact your GP or mental health service - or call Lifeline on 13 11 14 or Kids Help Line on 1800 551 800.
If your concern relates to a school student you may wish to contact the school counsellor at your local school.
