Consulting with parents

Schools need to have good communication with parents about students’ health needs.

They will ask parents to complete forms from time to time.

These will include:

  • at enrolment
  • before excursions
  • to request the administration of prescribed medication
  • to request other support for a child's health
  • to request support for other complex health needs, such as severe allergies anaphylaxis

The principal can provide assistance to help parents make requests to the school or tell the school things about their child’s health. This can include access to interpreters.

Parents can approach the principal at any time with information about their child’s health. It may be helpful to make an appointment with the principal if the issue is very important or complicated.

From time to time schools will ask parents to check, and where necessary update, student health information including emergency contact details. Schools can include an item in their newsletter (Ms word 24kb) or possibly send a note home.

This does not mean that parents should wait for a form to be sent home before they provide changes to information.

It is important that parents provide the school with updated information, including about any allergies, whenever it is relevant.
