Student Leadership Programs for Aboriginal Students

Through participating in effective Aboriginal student leadership programs, Aboriginal students develop confidence so they can become members of  inter-school, regional and state SRC groups.

Through student leadership, Aboriginal students can learn to negotiate and develop strategies which improve equity, fairness and the quality of school life for all students in NSW government schools.

Current directions for Aboriginal student leadership

The Review of Aboriginal Education for the Department of Education and Training recommends that each Region of the Department and TAFE Institute develop an Aboriginal student leadership strategy, through its Aboriginal Education and Training Planning Group, to ensure that Aboriginal student leaders are identified, mentored and supported.

The NSW Aboriginal Education Consultative Group Inc (AECG) supports Aboriginal Student Leadership programs in all NSW government schools.

"I strongly urge principals, teachers, Aboriginal Education Assistants (AEAs), and parents to encourage Aboriginal students to participate in the Aboriginal student leadership programs. I will encourage our delegates at the conference to promote this program in their local communities to ensure as local AECGs, that their Aboriginal students are participating. The promotion of the Aboriginal student leadership programs will provide our delegates with the necessary information to take back to their communities." Dave Ella, President NSW AECG
