Program of Leadership for Aboriginal Youth (PLAY)

PLAY began in 2002 in the Orange area. All schools were invited to work on the aims of the PLAY program:

  • increase leadership and participation activities for Aboriginal students
  • increase co-operation and understanding between Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal students and the wider community
  • develop a positive attitude to education by improving self esteem, employment opportunities and helping to create a positive future
  • improve the attendance and retention rates of Aboriginal students.

Strategies

The schools supported an exciting Reconciliation Day involving over 700 students.

  • Dancing was showcased.
  • The musical skills of students were on display.
  • Students had an opportunity to think about Australia's history and our future as a multicultural society.

Benefits
  • SRC teacher advisers have been trained in ways to create an inclusive SRC
  • the constitutions of inter-school and regional SRCs have been changed to increase Aboriginal representation
  • A Celebrating Diversity festival has been held to recognise the achievements.
